Country Living In A World Heritage Site

Marnik Lodge B&B situated in Monzi village a countryside farming community a mere 10 minutes drive from St. Lucia village in Kzn South Africa. Monzi falls within the proclaimed World Heritage Site of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park. St. Lucia Wetlands Park was declared South Africa's first World Heritage Site late in 1999. Marnik Lodge in Monzi is ideally situated as a base to further explore the sub-tropical paradise of St. Lucia Wetlands Park and surrounding big 5 game reserves which combined is referred to as The Elephant Coast in Kzn South Africa. The Elephant Coast in Kzn thus includes the St. Lucia Wetlands Park, Lake St. Lucia, 180 km's of unspoiled coastline and surrounding big 5 game reserves including the world famous Hluhluwe/Imfolozi game reserves.

Combine warm hospitality in a tranquil countryside setting, the activities and adventures awaiting the explorer to the Elephant Coast and you have the recipe for a perfect countryside escape. Marnik Lodge offers breakfast as well as optional lunch and dinner. The fine cuisine is traditional South African with a bar including a variety of popular South African wines. For those who prefer to dine out, the Cane Cutters restaurant is minutes away and nearby St. Lucia village boasts several restaurants catering to a variety of tastes. (Fish is the sought after choice in this area).

The sub-tropical paradise of Monzi village ensures good weather most of the year (The area boasts over 300 sun-filled days a year). The list of outdoor activities is numerous and therefore a planned visit to this area should be between 3-5 days minimum. A few highlights of activities are :-

  • Hippo & Crocodile Boat Safari on Lake St. Lucia.

  • Day-trip the adjoining big 5 game reserves of Hluhluwe/Imfolozi.

  • Cape Vidal beaches & Eastern Shores game reserve.

  • Traditional Zulu Village.

  • Night Game Drive.

  • Seasonal Whale watching.

  • Seasonal Turtle Tours.

Activities and Tours in the area are collectively found nowhere else on earth. The St. Lucia Wetland Park boasts more than two-thirds of the entire South African bird species, the warm Indian Ocean is home to more than 80% of South African fish species and the Park has more animal, fauna & flora species than the Kruger National Park and Okavongo Swamps combined.

If you can squeeze some time for shopping, Canerats crafts in Monzi, Ilala Weavers in Hluhluwe and the curio store at Dumazulu traditional village all excellent outlets for arts & crafts.
